Sheets = Total Area / Sheet Area × 1.10 (10% waste)
Total Area= Sum of wall and ceiling areas
Sheet Area= Width × Height of drywall sheet

Tips & Notes

  • Standard residential construction uses 1/2-inch thick drywall for walls and 5/8-inch for ceilings.
  • Hang sheets horizontally on walls to reduce the total length of seams.
  • Use moisture-resistant (green board) drywall in bathrooms and kitchens.

Common Mistakes

  • Not subtracting door and window openings from the wall area.
  • Forgetting to include the ceiling in the estimate.
  • Underestimating waste — always add 10% minimum for cuts and mistakes.

Drywall Calculator Overview

Drywall Calculator Overview

The Drywall Calculator estimates sheet count, joint tape, and related materials for interior wall and ceiling finishing projects. By entering room dimensions and selecting sheet size, you get an accurate material list that includes a standard waste allowance for cuts and adjustments.

Drywall sheets come in standard 4-foot widths with lengths of 8, 10, or 12 feet. For standard 8-foot ceilings, 4×8 sheets are the most practical choice. For taller ceilings, longer sheets reduce the number of horizontal seams and produce a cleaner finish.

The 10% waste factor accounts for cuts around outlets, windows, doors, and corners. Complex room layouts with many angles or recesses may require a higher waste allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Calculate the total wall area (perimeter × height), add ceiling area if applicable, divide by the sheet size (32, 40, or 48 sq ft), then add 10% for waste. A typical 12×15 room with 8-foot ceilings needs about 20-24 sheets of 4×8 drywall.

Use 4×8 sheets for easy handling and standard 8-foot ceilings. Use 4×12 sheets for 9-10 foot ceilings to eliminate a horizontal seam. Longer sheets mean fewer joints but are heavier and harder to maneuver.

Plan for about 0.053 gallons of joint compound per square foot of drywall. A 5-gallon bucket covers roughly 100 square feet of seams with three coats.

Sheetrock is a brand name for drywall made by USG Corporation. Functionally they are the same product — gypsum plaster pressed between thick sheets of paper.
